snack time: poached pears

I love poached pears in the fall. They are so sweet and flavorful, just perfect to tuck into during colder months.

How to whip 'em up: In a sauce pan boil (and stir occasionally) for 5 minutes: 1 cup red wine, 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar, 1/2 cup sugar, 2 inch lemon skin (just peel a section off with a potato peeler), juice of about 1/2 lemon, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves. While this is boiling cut the bottom off of two pears, then peel the skin off with a potato peeler. Place pears in sauce pan and reduce mixture to simmer. Rotate the pears several times in the next 20 minutes. Remove pears. Bring mixture to a strong boil (this is for the sauce) for 3 minutes then remove from heat. Drizzle pears with your fancy balsamic reduction sauce, but don't forget to remove the lemon zest!
